25 June 2007 One of the fun things to see each summer is the emergence of new young swimmers. Such was the case on Saturday in the opening 'A' meet of the 2007 season. Caroline Wittich opened up more than a few eyes in the 2nd race of the day, the 8 & Under 25m Freestyle. Swimming like a seasoned veteran, young Caroline (7) shot out to an early lead and took minimal breaths, as she streaked to a first place swim in an impressive 19.86 seconds. We've all heard the sports phrase, "It all begins here." Well, in swimming, it really does begin in the 8 & Under races. Congratulations to Caroline!
29 June 2007 We have one pressing need with our youngest Wahoosswim a legal breaststroke. This is especially true with the 8 & Under Boys. The coaches are working extra hard to find and finetune the strokes of each young boy Wahoo. It turns out they think we've found a new Wahoo 8 & Under who has the breaststroke gene. On Monday night, Steve Steiner swam a legal and decent 25m breaststroke. Well done Steve. The most technically difficult stroke could play big dividends as the season continues.
3 July 2007 There were several great swims by young Wahoos at the CCH Shark reef. One particular relay deserves mention. Our 15-18 Boys 200m Medley relay brought up memories of the old days in Wahoo Waters when 15-18 at Walden Glen was King and Queen of the NVSL. The Fantastic Four of Austin Clark, Grant Kenny, Logan Lamons and Cory Chamberlin dropped 4 seconds from the previous week and pushed the CCH team to a team record. Our team's time was the fastest a 15-18 Boys Medley had swum in 8 seasons. Records at Walden Glen are tough to reach, but this group came close to last season's Relay All-Star cut. Other relays had great swims too: the 8&Under Girls dropped time and got a win; the 11-12 Boys team won a thriller and was not the team that DQ'd as many in attendance had feared. In all relays, we have many swimmers swimming at the bottom of their age groups and doing a fantastic job.
6 July 2007 Kids, this one goes to the older set. At the meet's conclusion, the able-bodied and strong-willed WAHOO PARENTS simply showed what toughness and depth exists in the waters of Walden Glen. It is noteworthy that two members of the victorious 2007 Parent Relay Team were bumped from the squad at the Parent Swim-off at last Monday's 'B' Meet. This year's team was no slouch. With Bob McEntire taking the lead leg, the Wahoos were right out in front or tied for the lead when Val Hayes came back in leg #2. When she touched, Val had given Bill Dougherty a slight lead on leg #3. That was llights out for the other teams. Bill gave a 5 meter lead to our closer Jeff Killian. Jeff held off a strong Rolling Hills swimmer in WAHOO fashion and victory was the Wahoos' Parents once again. Not to be overshadowed, the WG WAHOO COACHES had started the post-meet races with a strong win in a 100m Medley Relay. Congrats to Head Coach Scott Darwin (back), Assistant ST Coach Alex Watt (breast), Assistant Coach Austin Clark (Fly), and Ass't Head Coach Melea McCreary (Free).
12 July 2007 The Wahoos had some notable swims over the past week, the peak week of the NVSL season. At home vs. Mantua two young swimmers made an impact on the 8 & Under teams. Molly Croushore added some Wahoo speed to help the 8 & Under Girls Freestyle Relay drop time and earn a win. In the 8 & Unders, the team bid farewell to the 9-10 boys Timmy Sutton. Timmy posted top times in the 8 & Unders and will be a factor in the 9-10 Boys group in 2008. At Fox Hunt on Monday night, a young 8 & Under boy showed us that he indeed has the coveted breaststroke gene! Sam Hinson swam his first breaststroke 25m race and earned a spot on the Relay Carnival Modified Relay team. One other swim at Fox Hunt rates a special mention. Carra Dewing not only swam a tough IM race, but she turned around right after that swim to give teammate Claire Miron a good race in an unofficial 50m Freestyle race. That's a great teammate. Last night besides the previously mentioned top relay squads, we had two veteran boys step in for missing swimmers. Thanks to great freestyle swims by Cort Rushton and Sean "Keeper" Newmeyer. Sean has been completing rehab on a broken clavicle. Well done guys!
20 July 2007 At the Poplar Tree Dual Meet, one 9-10 Boy had a breakout day in the pool. Taylor Whitesel simply had two great swims and dropped significant time in both the 50m backstroke and the 25m FLY. Both of his times were under the 2007 All-Star cut times (18th fastest time swum on Divisional Day 2007). Taylor is determined and focused and it shows. Congratulations on a great effort. At Relay All-Stars our Mixed Age Girls proved most worthy of their 14th seed. They hit the water hard and dropped some time to finish with a season best 2:06:45 and a 12th place finish. This is the first mixed age relay from Walden Glen at Relay All-Stars in over 7 years. Congratulations to Cayla Chamberlin, Rachel McEntire, Kaitlyn Connolly, and Alex Watt!
