Swim of the Week

30 June 2006 — We had many great swims in our dual meet victory over the Sharks from Fair Oaks. Several Wahoos earned their first 'A' Meet ribbons and some their first ribbons swimming 50m races. Congratulations to all our new Wahoos and to those 9-10 year olds who scored their first points swimming 50s. Notably, we had one swimmer who had been training hard for two weeks outside the confines of Walden Glen. In his first 'A' Meet as the "anchor" of the 15-18 boys age group, Grant Kenny proved his mettle with some big wins and outstanding legs in the two relays. Two (yes) weeks of UVA swim camp paid off. Special thanks from this old "Hoo" for the sign Grant bought in Ch-ville that adorns the Wahoo Cafe Pavilion: Yes, it is WAHOO COUNTRY!

7 July 2006 — It is apparent that the 2006 Wahoos will look back on this summer season and use one word to sum up our success: Teamwork. No where is that more evident than in our Relays. Relays will be the rallying cry for the next few weeks, as this team has a chance to pull off some amazing feats. At Daventry, one of our up and coming Relays proved to be decisive: the MIXED AGE GIRLS 200m FREE RELAY. Congratulations to the McEntire Girls—Alexis and Rachel, Alex Watt and Melea McCreary. Remember Wahoos: Teamwork is this year's key to swimming success.

17 July 2006 — What else: the relays. Between our dual meets and the Relay Carnival, our 2006 is and will be defined by the performances of our relay teams. The Wahoos would not have won any of the first 3 dual meets had it not been for our relays. At Wednesday's Divison 9 Relay Carnival, the Wahoos almost pulled off the upset. The team swam faster in every race and posted some top league-wide times. Congratulations to all swimmers who swam in the Div 9 Relay Carnival.

21 July 2006 — The Final 'B' meet offered up some great improvements by several young Wahoos. We saw the return of the Luddy kids on an extended visit from Omaha Nebraska. In one particular race late in the meet, the coaches quickly realized that the Wahoos had a young 8 & Under swimmer who could swim a very competitive 25m FLY. Congratulations to Colleen Dewing for a great first 25m Fly. Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow as Colleen ages up to swim the 25m fly in the 9-10 girls event.

28 July 2006 — Young breaststrokers swimming legal. What a sweet sound. At the season's start, we were unsure if we would have an 8 & Under boy be able to swim a legal breaststroke. By the last dual meet, we had 3 Wahoos swim breast and NOT DQ. Even more stunning, Aiden Villavicencio was more than legal at Hayfield Farm. He won the race. Congratulations Aiden on a breakout season. The other swim involved a breaststroker—Alex Watt and her mixed age relay mates: Alexis McEntire, Rachel McEntire and Coach Melea McCreary. The mixed age girls had gotten selected to swim in the N VA Special Olympics Long Course Invitational at GMU. This meet is an all-star formatted meet. Times from the summer determine the top 8 entrants per event. Our relay team was the #8 seed. This was a first time long course swim for the McEntire girls and the first real big pool swim from blocks for both. The big meet feel did not deter the Wahoo Mixed Agers. Swimming in the outside lane, the girls swam brilliantly. Alexis swam the opening leg followed by her sister in the 2nd long 50m leg. They were in 5th position. On the 3rd leg, Alex took off and had the Wahoos right up there in 4th. Melea brought it home and almost got 4th place, outtouched by 2 tenths. More impressive was the time: 2:10—the same time they had in summer short course. The conversion from short to long course is about 1 second per 50m. That meant that our girls dropped about a second per leg from their best time—awesome.
